Vilnius Gallery Weekend (VGS), taking place from 10 to 13 September, will invite visitors to explore the capital’s art spaces, discover new exhibitions, take part in guided tours and educational activities, meet artists, and even venture beyond Vilnius.

This year, five branches of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art (LNDM) are taking part in Vilnius Gallery Weekend: the National Gallery of Art, the Radvila Palace Museum of Art, the Museum of Applied Arts and Design, the Vilnius Picture Gallery, and the Vytautas Kasiulis Museum of Art. During VGS, all five venues can be visited for half the regular admission price.

The LNDM National Gallery of Art (NDG) will invite visitors to artist-led tours of the exhibition “Borderlands. Miracles”, a guided tour of Aurelija Maknytė’s exhibition “Channels”, and a trip to the artist’s “land” by the Širvinta River.

On Friday, 11 September, and Saturday, 12 September, at 6:00 p.m., artist Vsevolodas Seva Kovalevskis will lead tours of the exhibition “Borderlands. Miracles”. Visitors can participate by purchasing a regular gallery admission ticket; advance registration is not required.

Drawing on his personal archive, fragmented memories and images circulated in the media, V. S. Kovalevskis explores the gap between the lived experiences of queer people, institutional memory and mediated truth. A monumental comic-style drawing takes visitors through the streets of Vilnius, London and Oslo, weaving events personally experienced by the artist into a graphic narrative about life amid constantly shifting conditions of insecurity.

On Saturday, 12 September, at 11:30 a.m., visitors are invited on a trip to Aurelija Maknytė’s “land” by the Širvinta River, where she lives, works and observes nature. Participants will visit “Wild Hall”, a 1:1-scale outline of the NDG’s Great Hall mown into a meadow. It offers a distinctive interpretation of the gallery space in nature, bringing architecture and the wild landscape together. A bus will take participants from the NDG car park and return them there afterwards. The trip will last approximately four hours. Participation is free, but places are limited and advance registration is required.

On Sunday, 13 September, at 1:00 p.m., a guided tour of Aurelija Maknytė’s exhibition “Channels” will take place with one of its curators, Agnė Narušytė. A gallery admission ticket is required, as is advance registration.

The exhibition “Channels” reveals the key themes of A. Maknytė’s research spanning more than three decades: light, television and television sets, archives and collections, and nature. Her work continuously brings together everyday history, nature and technology. Although her works emerge from everyday observation, collecting, documentation and years of research, they rarely become definitive, finished exhibits. Open-endedness, process and the possibility of continually reinterpreting accumulated material are among the central principles of her artistic practice.
