The national opera and ballet theatres of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are preparing three different productions for the coming months. Riga will stage Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier in October, while November will bring a contemporary ballet double bill to Vilnius and a family adventure ballet to Tallinn.
Latvia. The Latvian National Opera will premiere Der Rosenkavalier on 8 October. The production is directed by Viesturs Kairišs, with Zbigņevs Graca as musical director and conductor. Designer Germans Ermičs, working with the Latvian National Opera and Ballet for the first time, is creating the sets and costumes.
Lithuania. The Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre will premiere Gyvenimo pulsas (Pulse of Life) on 20 November. The evening pairs Širdies ritmu by British choreographer David Dawson with I like…, a new work by Lithuanian choreographer Martynas Rimeikis. The two one-act ballets are set to music by different composers and bring distinct approaches to contemporary dance to the same stage.
Estonia. The Estonian National Opera will present the world premiere of Kapten Morten lollide laeval (Captain Morten on the Ship of Fools) on 27 November. Created for families, the adventure ballet is choreographed and directed by Helen Veidebaum and based on a children’s story by Kaspar Jancis. Its music is by Jancis and Malle Maltis; Jancis is also designing the sets, costumes and video.
