Mogo/RSU defeated Tallinn’s Panter 4–1 at Mogo Hall on Wednesday in an Optibet Hockey League game. Ričards Grīnbergs, Vladimirs Zaicevs, Kristaps Skrastiņš and Markuss Megris scored for the home side.
Mogo/RSU veteran Henrijs Ančs made his first start in goal this season, while Georg Vladimirov started for Panter. Jānis Zemītis tested the visiting goaltender twice, and Vladimirov also stopped a shot from the blue line by Zaicevs.
Rūdolfs Polcs received a two-minute penalty for an overly aggressive play behind his own net. While shorthanded, Grīnbergs intercepted a pass and broke away from nearly all the opposition before two-metre-tall Panter defenceman Savelijs Novikovs disrupted him at the last moment. Maksims Lovkovs had the visitors’ most dangerous shot, which Ančs turned away. Panter forward Antons Māta made a skilful rush, and Kaspars Ziemiņš also had a good chance, but the first period ended scoreless.
Before the second period, Mogo/RSU president and Latvian Hockey Federation board member Māris Martinsons congratulated Elvis Želubovskis, who had recorded his 600th point in Latvian championship play in the previous game.
Early in the second period, Vladimirov stopped a shot from the blue line by Roberts Kaļķis. Mogo/RSU then took the lead on a power play while Mareks Potsinoks was serving a slashing penalty. Kristaps Sotnieks shot from distance, and Grīnbergs redirected the puck in front of goal to make it 1–0.
The home side doubled its lead two minutes later. Kaspars Daugaviņš held the puck behind the Panter net before finding Zaicevs in the middle of the zone. Zaicevs sent his shot inside the left post. At the other end, Ančs produced a fine save on a one-timer from Panter captain André Linde.
In the third period, Linde was penalised for holding Ings Jākobsons, giving Mogo/RSU another power play. Skrastiņš received the puck in the left face-off circle, took aim and fired it into the near top corner.
Less than a minute later, 16-year-old Megris scored his first OHL goal from a pass by Rolans Vasiļjevs, putting Mogo/RSU 4–0 ahead. Novikov beat Ančs with a wrist shot late in the game, but the home side held on for a 4–1 win.
The two goaltenders, Ančs and Vladimirov, were named their teams’ best players.
Mogo/RSU will play Liepāja at Mogo Hall on Saturday, 26 September, at 13:35.
