Maris Martinsons, businessman elected to the Latvian Basketball Association Board to strengthen sport governance in Latvia.
At this year’s general assembly of members of the Latvian Basketball Association (LBS), entrepreneur and long-time basketball supporter Māris Martinsons was elected as a new member of the Board. His appointment strengthens the LBS’s professional capacity. The LBS Board includes representatives from various fields—basketball club executives, sports sector experts, and organizational leaders—who jointly define the strategic directions for the development of basketball in Latvia.
The Latvian Basketball Association is the country’s principal governing body for basketball, responsible for the development, promotion, and management of the sport at all levels. The LBS coordinates the youth basketball system, the activities of national teams, domestic competitions, and Latvia’s representation on the international stage, while working closely with clubs, coaches, municipalities, and international basketball organizations.
The LBS operates through a multi-level structure in which the Board plays a key role by setting strategic goals and development priorities, while the Executive Board is responsible for day-to-day operations and the implementation of decisions. Specialized commissions—covering coaching, youth basketball, referees, 3×3 basketball, and other areas—ensure focused work in specific fields of basketball development.
One of the most significant recent milestones in the LBS’s activities was the EuroBasket European Men’s Basketball Championship hosted in Latvia this autumn, which brought Europe’s strongest national teams and thousands of fans to Riga. The successful staging of the tournament demonstrated Latvia’s ability to organize high-level international sporting events, while also making a substantial contribution to the country’s visibility, sports environment, and economy.
With the new composition of the Board, including the involvement of Māris Martinsons, the Latvian Basketball Association will continue its work toward sustainable basketball development—strengthening the sports system, promoting youth participation, and ensuring the competitiveness of Latvian basketball both domestically and internationally.
