Latvian basketball star Kristaps Porziņģis has agreed to a new two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors worth $40 million. The deal includes a player option for the second season, giving Porziņģis the flexibility to decide on his future after the 2026–27 campaign.
The 30-year-old joined Golden State in February through a trade from the Atlanta Hawks. Although injuries and health issues limited him to just 15 regular-season appearances, Porziņģis averaged 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, demonstrating his value as a key contributor in the Warriors’ frontcourt.
The new contract confirms that Golden State’s management sees the Latvian forward as an important part of the team’s core alongside Stephen Curry as the franchise continues its pursuit of another NBA championship.
From Liepāja to NBA Champion
Porziņģis entered the NBA in 2015 after being selected fourth overall by the New York Knicks. During his career, he has also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks.
His greatest achievement to date came in 2024 when he won the NBA championship with the Boston Celtics. Over ten NBA seasons, Porziņģis has averaged 19.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 36.4 percent from three-point range, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier stretch big men.
Warriors Focus on Experience During Busy Offseason
Porziņģis’ contract extension is only one part of Golden State’s active offseason.
Over the past month, the Warriors have:
- Re-signed Kristaps Porziņģis to a new two-year contract;
- Agreed to a two-year deal with veteran center Al Horford;
- Selected versatile forward Yaxel Lendeborg in the NBA Draft, a player widely viewed as capable of contributing immediately.
At the same time, the organization continues to fine-tune its roster. Draymond Green declined his player option, providing the Warriors with greater salary-cap flexibility. Meanwhile, U.S. media have linked the franchise with a potential pursuit of LeBron James, although no official negotiations or agreements have been confirmed.
Chasing Another Championship
Following a disappointing previous season, the Warriors have made their intentions clear: build an experienced roster around Stephen Curry and maximize the remaining prime years of one of the greatest players in NBA history.
Keeping Kristaps Porziņģis is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s most significant offseason moves, strengthening Golden State’s ambitions of returning to championship contention in the highly competitive Western Conference.
